Sustainable Development Discussions and the Role of Universities on Day 12 of Summer School: Moving Toward Green Cities and SDGs

Bintaro, South Tangerang 02/10/2024 - The 12th day of the Summer School "Shaping the Future – Sustainability, Cooperation, & Culture" presented exciting topics on sustainable development. Today's agenda included sessions on development economics, a workshop on developing Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) concepts, and a reflection on the three-week study trip in Germany.

The first session began with a lecture on development economics, highlighting three key categories that influence economic development: geography, institutions, and culture. Geography, for example, is considered a major factor in the divide between developed and developing countries. "A notable example is the comparison between Nogales, Mexico, and Arizona, USA," said one of the speakers. In addition to geography, institutions and culture also play vital roles in shaping people's actions and government policies.

After this session, participants moved on to a workshop on developing SDG concepts led by Dr. Thillo Zimmermann. The discussion focused on how universities can actively contribute to achieving these global development goals. "Universities have a strategic role in research, education, operations, and external leadership to support the achievement of the SDGs," Dr. Zimmermann explained. The session was interactive, with participants asking questions on how universities can contribute to these areas.

The next session featured a lecture on creating green cities, delivered by Prof. Dr. Sandra Kurfürst. This discussion focused on efforts to achieve SDG 11, which aims to create inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. "Eco-urbanism, a concept that emerged in the 1990s, is one solution to creating urban green spaces, which are essential for promoting biodiversity, reducing air pollution, and providing spaces for food production," Prof. Kurfürst elaborated.

The day's activities concluded with a reflection session where participants were invited to share their thoughts on the three-week study experience in Germany. The atmosphere was warm and full of camaraderie as the group reflected on their journey.
