Unveiling the History of Cologne: From Legendary Perfume to Joyful Carnival

Bintaro, South Tangerang 02/10/2024 – On August 16, 2024, students began a cultural tour in Cologne, Germany, exploring the city's rich heritage. Their journey started at VHS Köln (Volkshochschule Köln), then continued through the vibrant streets during Carnival season, and concluded with explorations of perfume history and modern street art.

Their first stop was at VHS Köln, or "People's High School of Cologne," an institution that serves as a cornerstone of adult education in the city. VHS Köln offers a wide range of courses and programs designed to support lifelong learning and cultural integration.

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to speak with Humayra, a lecturer of Afghan descent responsible for introducing democracy at VHS Köln. Humayra explained the various political parties in Germany and how VHS Köln plays a crucial role in helping newcomers integrate into German society.

“VHS Köln provided us with a new perspective on the importance of understanding local culture and politics for immigrants. It was truly an enlightening experience,” said one UPJ student.

VHS Köln offers programs specifically designed to help immigrants understand political structures, along with language courses, cultural orientation sessions, and vocational training to support their integration into German society.

The next adventure took the students into the heart of Cologne's festive spirit through a session titled "Cultural Cologne." They visited a costume store in preparation for the famous Cologne Carnival (Kölner Karneval), one of the largest and most beloved festivals in Germany.

Kölner Karneval is a centuries-old tradition that transforms the city into a vibrant spectacle filled with color, music, and joy. The students learned about the history of this carnival, its significance to Cologne's cultural identity, and the intricate costumes and masks that play a central role in the celebrations.

“We not only learned about the history and culture of Cologne, but also experienced firsthand the energy and joy brought by the Cologne Carnival. This is an unforgettable experience,” added one student.
